somerville - Fundraising event
Wednesday 14 October 2019 thirty-three students arrived at school bright and early to participate in the Ponytail Project where they were challenged to ‘Rock the Chop’.
The Ponytail Project is a fundraising campaign led by Cancer Council Queensland and encourages high school students to chop off their ponytails to raise funds for families affected by cancer.
Students surpassed their initial goal of $7,500 in just under two weeks and set a new goal of $15,000. Students have raised $19,428 and counting – a remarkable accomplishment for the first year that the Ponytail Project has taken place at Somerville House.
In addition to raising funds, some girls donated their hair to Cancer Council Queensland Wig and Turban service which provides synthetic wigs to cancer patients.
With one in two people diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, this is such a worthy cause and we are incredibly proud of the girls who lost their locks to create change, undoubtedly inspiring more girls to do the same in future years. If you would like to donate to raise funds for vital cancer research.

December 2023- Me to you
December 2 nd 2023 was an incredible day.it proved how much we can achieve working together in making a event a memorable and impactful one
The essence of this event was to offer free haircuts to members of our community who are vulnerable and marginalised .It is my firm belief cultivated though the years in this profession that hairstylists forge powerful connections with clients not just through my craft but also through meaningful conversations. These connections have the potential to bolster self-confidence and enhance mental wellbeing significantly.
Did it make an impact?
Absolutely.
We met the most beautiful people Mums ,kids, Aunt’s who shared love gratitude and wonderful stories and walked out with beautiful hair and bags of gratitude.

Your hair can be part of who you are
I want to share something incredible and meaningful that I was fortunate to be part of this friday and it was Bloody beautiful., as i believe that every act of kindness, every contribution, and every step we take together towards beating blood cancer is worth every effort.
As a hair stylist, i can see how heartbreaking it is to lose your hair against your own will.
Hair brings out ones personality, style, and identity. I spend every day empowering people by giving them hair that brings out their most confident selves.
World’s Greatest Shave celebrates the everyday heroes in our community doing ‘bloody beautiful’ acts of shaving, cutting, colouring, or donating, while helping to make the world less lonely, scary, and difficult for blood cancer patients.
Thank you, Mark Doonar for this incredible opportunity to be able to make a little difference.
